How do you use social media?
The title explains how I feel about social media in general.
Although I find it helpful in a lot of ways, I also find that we often spend way too much time on social media and not enough time in social contact.
It’s a way to keep connected without actually communicating beyond much more than a keyboard. Keyboard warriors are raising awareness that human interaction and compassion are becoming things of the past.
It is much easier to keep up with family and friends through social media sites but, if that’s the only interaction you are having, is it really interacting?
Is the here and now aspect of social media lighting the way to anxiety, impatience and depression? The excitement and anticipation of receiving a letter in the mail is no more. A phone call from a long time acquaintance, family or friend has been replaced by text messages that are often misconstrued and have little to no feeling. Yet we are becoming a society of fast pace. Not much communication, learning about others while standing in the grocery line. We check our own items out and are now in a hurry to get in and get out of the stores before anyone sees or talks to us. Yes I’ve been guilty of this myself at times.
Human interactions has been replaced with social media. We get on the social media sites to see who we can disagree with. Who we can argue with. Who we can somehow find power by belittling others, degrading or shaming them. Lieing for the sake of saving face. Our words are twisted. Our voices are often silenced. Our points are taken as a direct attack on someone’s intelligence. We look at what someone posts as the gospel. We envy our neighbors. We demean those that look different, act different or sound different. Lets just leave the politics out of all of this because that in itself is on a different level.
So social media does have it’s perks. It does have positive aspects to it. If we’re not careful it changes who we deep down inside really are
